Mid-year progress report

Hello Everyone,
Our pre-registration rate of $25 for adults for the entire weekend and $10 for teens ends on April 30th. Pre-registration allows you to skip the lines waiting for a badge, you also get a color badge, program book and any other goodies we collect between now and the convention! Plus you save about $15 off the at the door price. You can purchase memberships here: http://atomacon.org. Memberships are non refundable but you can have your membership carry over to the next year or transfer them to another person.

We are still booking some guests but so far we have:

Literary Guest of Honor– Hugo, Nebula ,and John W. Campbell Award Winner: Robert J. Sawyer. He’s been nominated for 3 Nebula Awards, won 1; 11 Hugos, won 1, 4 Campbells- won 1, 11 Time winner for Best Novel for the Canadian Science Fiction Awards (Aurora),6 time winner for the Homer Award for best novel and also multiple international awards. So I would say the fellow knows how to write a novel! He has also developed work for TV and movies, and teaches about writing.

Science Guest of Honor: Brian Malow. Brian is Earth’s Premier Science Comedian (self proclaimed). He has performed for NSF, AAAS, JPL, NIST, ACS, AGU – and many other acronyms. Brian has made science videos for Time Magazine’s website  and is a contributor to Neil deGrasse Tyson’s radio show. He’s  been featured on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, co-hosted shows on The Weather Channel, and been profiled in Nature, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Washington Post, and the New York Times.
Brian currently works in science communication for the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, and blogs for Scientific American.

  • Art and Music Track– here we will have demonstrations and tutorials, our make and take projects, quick sketch contests (this year we will have one for kids and teens and one for for the adults), prop building challenge, puppet making and any other hands on projects we can think of!
  • Steampunk track– trying to work with some steampunk groups to have a track of all things steampunk. If you have some ideas or want to help run the track, please contact us!

  • Charlie Kaufman will be back with his damage assessments of a Gozilla Attack, Zombie Outbreak and new for this year Sharknado! If you missed it last year, it’s a great and funny presentation but also gives you real information on how the government prepares themselves for natural or un-natural disasters.

Our con is for fans by fans so fan-run panels are always encouraged.
